What Is Turmeric ?

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a flowering plant of the  family Zingiberaceae. It contains a chemical called curcumin that suppresses swelling.it is commonly known as "Haldi".The first reference to turmeric can be found in Atharvaveda. 
 
Turmeric is prescribed to cure jaundice. It is also prescribed for the treatment of leprosy.Zingiberaceae, its rhizomes  are used for cooking.It is used as a cooking spice.
